A cold front will move south across the area this evening with showers and thunderstorms possible across portions of western… central… and northern Oklahoma this evening. At 5 PM…portions of a cold front extending from near Cheyenne and Watonga… to near Dover and Perry Oklahoma… was beginning to slowly move south. Isolated showers and storms were also beginning to develop near the boundary in north central Oklahoma. Strong wind gusts and cloud to ground lightning are going to be the main concerns with any storm. The cold front will continue to move south this evening. The front is expected to extend from near Erick and El Reno… to Edmond and Cushing by 9 to 10 PM. Winds will shift from southwest to northwest as the frontal boundary passes. Wind speeds will remain the same ahead and behind the front at 10 to 20 mph with some gusts above 25 mph. Isolated to widely scattered showers and storms will remain possible along and behind the front this evening. Given the recent wildfire activity…firefighters and emergency management personnel should remain alert if thunderstorms approach and prepare for sudden wind shifts and strong and gusty winds which may fan ongoing wildfires…making them spread more rapidly. In addition to the increase in winds…frequent lightning with the stronger storms may ignite new wildfires given the very dry nature of vegetation.
