500 PM Oklahoma Weather Update (10/6/2011)

Southeast winds will remain strong and gusty this evening. At 5 PM…wind speeds averaged about 25 mph with gusts around 40 in northwest Oklahoma. Elsewhere…speeds averaged 20 to 25 mph with gusts around 30. The sustained wind speed and direction will change very little through midnight. The higher gusts will decrease as sunset approaches…but a strong low level jet will bring another increase to gust speeds between 9 PM and midnight. A few thunderstorms may form in the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles this evening. The storms would more likely move up into Kansas… but there is a slight chance of a thunderstorm reaching northwest Oklahoma late this evening after sunset. Otherwise…look for humidity and cloud cover to increase substantially overnight…as a plume of deeper moisture arrives from the Gulf of Mexico. Temperatures will fall slowly through the 70s this evening.
