Clarke & Butler County, AL Tornadoes Surveyed (4/15/2011)


More of the tornadoes from Friday have been surveyed in southwestern Alabama. Here are the findings.

…ADDITIONAL PRELIMINARY STORM DAMAGE ASSESSMENT TEAM FINDINGS…

ON SUNDAY…THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN MOBILE CONTINUED THE
PROCESS OF SURVEYING THE MULTIPLE AREAS OF DAMAGE PRODUCED BY THE
SEVERE STORMS OF FRIDAY APRIL 15TH. HERE ARE SOME PRELIMINARY
FINDINGS FROM THE SURVEYS COMPLETED TODAY.

* EVENT LOCATION: GAINESTOWN, ALABAMA (SOUTHERN CLARKE COUNTY)
* STORM CLASSIFICATION: EF-2 INTENSITY TORNADO
* MAXIMUM WIDTH: 120 YARDS
* INJURIES: 2 MINOR
* NOTES: ALL OF THE DAMAGE OCCURRED ON WALKABOUT ROAD. ONE SINGLE
WIDE MOBILE HOME WAS COMPLETELY DESTROYED WITH ONE INDIVIDUAL
SUFFERING MINOR INJURIES. A DOUBLE WIDE MOBILE HOME WAS SHIFTED
THREE FEET OFF OF ITS FOUNDATION AND LOST MOST OF ITS ROOF. ONE
OTHER MOBILE HOME AND A RESIDENCE SUFFERED MINOR TO MODERATE ROOF
DAMAGE. NUMEROUS HARDWOOD AND SOFTWOOD TREES WERE SNAPPED OR UPROOTED

* EVENT LOCATION: NE MONROE COUNTY (TUNNEL SPRINGS/OLD TEXAS AREA)
* STORM CLASSIFICATION: MULTIPLE TORNADO TRACKS (EF-3 AND EF-2
INTENSITY DAMAGE OBSERVED)
* MAXIMUM WIDTH: 500 YARDS WIDE AT RILEY CROSSINGS
* NOTES: AT LEAST TWO SUPERCELL THUNDERSTORMS TRACKED OVER THE SAME
AREA OF NORTHEAST MONROE COUNTY…PRODUCING SEVERAL TORNADO TRACKS.
MORE ANALYSIS WILL HAVE TO BE CONDUCTED TO DETERMINE THE DETAILS OF
THE TRACKS. EF-2 DAMAGE WAS NOTED AT THE AMITY MISSIONARY BAPTIST
CHURCH ON ROBINSON CREEK RD IN TUNNEL SPRINGS. A LARGE SECTION OF
THE CHURCH ROOF WAS LIFTED OFF. IN RILEY CROSSINGS…THE SAVANNAH
MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH SUFFERED SIGNIFICANT ROOF DAMAGE…LOSING
MUCH OF THE ROOF COVERING. TWO HOMES BEHIND THE CHURCH SUFFERED
EXTENSIVE DAMAGE. ONE BRICK HOME SUFFERED COMPLETE FAILURE OF THE
ROOF AND WALLS OF THE ATTACHED GARAGE. A CINDER BLOCK HOME LOST A
SIGNIFICANT PORTION OF ITS SOUTH FACING ROOF. ALL OF THIS DAMAGE WAS
OF EF-2 INTENSITY. FURTHER NORTHEAST IN THE OLD TEXAS COMMUNITY…
THE BETHLEHEM METHODIST CHURCH WAS COMPLETELY DESTROYED WITH ONLY A
FEW INTERIOR WALLS LEFT REMAINING. THIS DAMAGE WAS CONSISTENT WITH
EF-3 INTENSITY DAMAGE NEAR 145 MPH.

* EVENT LOCATION: FORREST HOME, ALABAMA (NW BUTLER COUNTY)
* STORM CLASSIFICATION: EF-0 INTENSITY TORNADO
* MAXIMUM WIDTH: 80 YARDS
* NOTES: SPORADIC TREE DAMAGE WITH TREES UPROOTED. ALSO SOME MINOR
SHINGLE DAMAGE OBSERVED TO TWO HOMES OFF OF BROAD STREET.

* EVENT LOCATION: SHERLING LAKE AREA (N BUTLER COUNTY)
* STORM CLASSIFICATION: EF-1 INTENSITY TORNADO
* MAXIMUM WIDTH: 400 YARDS
* NOTES: EXTENSIVE TREE DAMAGE ALONG SHERLING LAKE DRIVE…INCLUDING
THE SOUTHEASTERN PORTION OF THE CAMBRIAN RIDGE GOLF COURSE AND
SHERLING LAKE PARK CAMPGROUND.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN MOBILE WILL BE CONDUCTING ADDITIONAL
SURVEYS OVER THE NEXT SEVERAL DAYS TO FINALIZE THE INFORMATION ON
THE ABOVE TORNADOES AND TO SURVEY OTHER AREAS IMPACTED BY FRIDAY`S
SEVERE WEATHER. MORE DETAILED INFORMATION OF THE DAMAGE WILL BE
PROVIDED ONCE THE SURVEYS ARE FINALIZED.
