Public Severe Weather Outbreak Statement

This is a product that the Storm Prediction Center will issue when there is a risk of severe weather. We still have a slight risk and moderate risk target areas for today. Review your action plans. We still have a pair of tornado watches, which I will post information on those in another blog post shortly. Here is today’s public severe weather outbreak statement from the Storm Prediction Center.

PUBLIC SEVERE WEATHER OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0430 AM CDT SAT APR 16 2011

…SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS EXPECTED OVER PARTS OF THE CAROLINAS AND
SOUTHERN VIRGINIA LATER TODAY INTO TONIGHT…

THE NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER IN NORMAN OK IS FORECASTING THE
DEVELOPMENT OF A FEW STRONG TORNADOES OVER PARTS OF THE CAROLINAS
AND SOUTHERN VIRGINIA LATER TODAY INTO TONIGHT.

THE AREAS MOST LIKELY TO EXPERIENCE THIS ACTIVITY INCLUDE

CENTRAL AND EASTERN NORTH CAROLINA
CENTRAL AND EASTERN SOUTH CAROLINA
SOUTHERN VIRGINIA

ELSEWHERE…SURROUNDING THE AREA OF GREATEST RISK…SEVERE STORMS
ALSO MAY OCCUR FROM SOUTHERN AND EASTERN GEORGIA INTO THE MID
ATLANTIC STATES

THE UPPER LEVEL STORM SYSTEM THAT IN PART WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE
SEVERE WEATHER OVER THE GULF STATES ON FRIDAY WILL CONTINUE EAST
ACROSS THE OHIO VALLEY AND CENTRAL APPALACHIANS TODAY AND TONIGHT.

AS THIS OCCURS…A BAND OF FAST JET STREAM FLOW WILL SWEEP
NORTHEASTWARD FROM ALABAMA AND TENNESSEE EARLY IN THE DAY TO THE MID
ATLANTIC COAST BY EVENING.

AT THE SAME TIME…A STREAM OF INCREASINGLY WARM AND HUMID AIR WILL
SPREAD NORTH ACROSS THE CAROLINAS AND SOUTHERN VIRGINA…AHEAD OF A
COLD FRONT ASSOCIATED WITH THE OHIO VALLEY STORM SYSTEM.

THE COMBINATION OF STRENGTHENING WINDS…DAYTIME HEATING…
LOW-LEVEL MOISTURE RETURN ALONG AND AHEAD OF THE COLD FRONT WILL
CREATE AN ENVIRONMENT FAVORABLE FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF LONG-LIVED
SUPERCELL THUNDERSTORMS. THESE STORMS WILL BE CAPABLE OF PRODUCING
A FEW STRONG TORNADOES…IN ADDITION TO DAMAGING WINDS AND HAIL.

STATE AND LOCAL EMERGENCY MANAGERS ARE MONITORING THIS DEVELOPING
SITUATION. THOSE IN THE THREATENED AREA ARE URGED TO REVIEW SEVERE
WEATHER SAFETY RULES AND TO LISTEN TO RADIO…TELEVISION…AND NOAA
WEATHER RADIO FOR POSSIBLE WATCHES…WARNINGS…AND STATEMENTS LATER
TODAY.
