Tornado Producing Squall Line Drops Tornadoes in Girard, Honey Bend, Nokomis & Henning, Illinois Producing Severe Weather Into Indiana (UPDATED 4/23/2011)


Storm chasers reported a large tornado on the ground near the town of Girard, Illinois, about 25 miles southwest of Springfield, Illinois. Here is a pic of that storm on radar.

At the time of this post, 2 houses were destroyed. Also people were trapped inside structures with rescues in progress.

Below is the findings of that tornado in Girard, IL and the weather statement issued from St. Louis NWS:

Girard, Illinois EF3 Tornado

The tornado touched down at 6:05 pm 2.5 miles WSW of Girard, Illinois, crossed Pleasant Hill Road approximately 1.5 miles NW of Girard, moved east approximately one mile north of town and lifted 3.0 miles ENE of Girard. Many of the houses that were damaged were rated EF2 with large portions of the roof badly damaged. Numerous outbuildings were either destroyed or sustained major damage along this track as well. One brick home sustained extensive damage with most of the exterior walls destroyed, with the interior wall structure intact. This damage was rated EF3. The average path width of the tornado was 150 yards with a maximum width of 200 yards. The highest rating of the damage was EF3 and with peak wind speeds of 150 mph. Two minor injuries occurred. The total path length of the tornado was 6.5 miles

Here is the statement from the Farmersville tornado as well as the bulletin that St. Louis NWS issued on the storm.

Farmersville EF2 Tornado (Montgomery County, Illinois): The tornado began around 608 pm, one third of a mile northwest of the intersection of Studebaker Ave. and West Frontage Road, or around one and a quarter miles north of Farmersville. The tornado moved east snapping 3 power poles along the frontage road just to the west of Interstate 55. A grain bin originally lcoated just to the west of I-55 was rolled across the interstate and deposited in a tree line a quarter mile to the east of the interstate. A number of trees were also snapped or uprooted in the vicinity of the grain bin. The tornado moved slightly south of due east damaging or destroying two machine sheds along County Road 400 East. Debris was scattered well to the east and the tornado appeared to lift near County Road 600 East around 612 pm. The maximum damage from the this tornado was rated EF-2. The path length was around 3.2 miles with a maximum width of 150 yards.

Honey Bend (Macoupin/Montgomery IL) EF2 Tornado: A tornado touched down around 6:20 p.m. five miles north of Litchfield, Il and crossed I-55 and continued east remaining just south of Honey Bend. Many homes and outbuildings sustained damage rated EF1. One home approximately 0.75 miles southeast of Honey Bend sustained extensive damage with the entire west facing roof destroyed. A large outbuilding was also completely destroyed at this farmstead. The damage was rated EF2, with peak winds of 120 mph. The maximum path width of the tornado was 200 yards and the length of the tornado was 3.5 miles.

7:50 pm CT: 7 homes reported damaged in Girard, IL. Also, line of storms which moved through Champaign, IL produced a 74 mph wind gust to the east in St. Joseph.

8:05 pm CT: The storms were fast approaching west central Indiana with continued tornado warnings due to rain wrapped tornadoes due to the severe nature of the squall line. Also, a confirmed tornado was on the ground near Henning, IL as well.

Radar of bow echo at 10:15 pm ET/9:15 pm CT just west & north of Indianapolis:

10:27 pm ET/9:27 pm CT: New Buncombe, IL had a wicked wind gust of 103 mph MEASURED!! This bow echo/squall line is taking on the characteristic of a derecho. Same can be said about the squall line in Indiana.

As of 11:00 pm ET/10:00 pm CT: This severe squall line was starting to wind down, but would be capable of 60-70 mile per hour winds & some small hail. The tornado threat has come down significantly.
